Activism Through Education

Education is never neutral.

As Paulo Freire wrote, “Education either functions as an instrument used to bring about conformity, or it becomes the practice of freedom.” We take that truth seriously. Education can be used to maintain oppression by discouraging critical thought, flattening curiosity, and training people to accept systems they did not choose. Or it can be used to help people understand power, question what they have been told, and step into their full agency.

Threadwork is committed to education as a practice of freedom.

We believe education is essential to community because it equips people with the tools they need to participate fully in collective life. This includes the ability to think critically, develop practical and relational skills, communicate clearly across difference, and remain curious rather than defensive when confronted with new ideas or uncomfortable truths.

Our educational work is not about prescribing ideology or producing agreement. It is about empowering people to understand context, recognize patterns of power, and make informed choices about how they engage with the world and one another. Education, in this sense, is about capacity-building. It prepares people to act with intention rather than reaction.

We create learning spaces rooted in grace and accountability, where people can unlearn what no longer serves them, ask real questions, and grow without fear of humiliation or exile. Curiosity is protected because curiosity is what allows transformation to happen. Communication is emphasized because movements fail when people cannot speak, listen, or repair together.

Activism through education is how communities become durable. It is how people move from awareness to action, from isolation to participation, and from inherited narratives to self-determined futures. This is how education becomes a pathway to collective power rather than control.

We develop curricula and resources to empower organizers, educators, and allies. Learning together helps transform communities and sustain movements.
